While walking around the Town Ballroom Tuesday night, I was informed that the Hold Steady was the “greatest bar band ever,” and “The Tragically Hip of Brooklyn.”
Both descriptions proved true.
The crowd was on the small side, but those on the lower level sang along to every word and those on the upper levels never stopped bobbing their heads.
Seemingly every person there…

Al Madrigal got a late start to the comedy game, but has made up plenty of time by becoming a mainstay on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart.
He’s now acting on NBC’s “About A Boy” after stints on “Gary Unmarried” and “Free Agents,” plus his award-winning comedy special “Why Is the Rabbit Crying?”.
Madrigal will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 and 10 p.m. on Friday and…

The Queen City Music Lottery formed 15 new bands via a random lottery system beginning this past January.
Musicians and non-musicians were invited to put their name on a list to be randomly placed in a new band. It was so random that they could have ended up with a group of all drummers, vocalists, or even non-musicians.
The goals of organizers Sugar City and Peterwalkee…

Most of the time, grassroots local bands can’t plan for once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
When Williamsville-based More Than Me won Hard Rock Rising’s Global Battle of the Bands in 2010—then opened for Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Pearl Jam in London’s Hyde Park—local momentum sputtered and the band’s name faded into history after playing Taste of Buffalo, Oktoberfest in…

Rannazzisi has also performed on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and appeared in the feature films “Summer of Sam” and “For…
Cleveland’s Cloud Nothings opened their 2014 tour here in Buffalo at the Iron Works on Friday night.
The three-piece just released their fourth studio album, “Here and Nowhere Else,” on Tuesday and the band is generating a lot of buzz.
I’m pretty sure that after this tour, the band members will no longer have to man the merchandise table and set up their own equipment like they…

As a Giants fan, comedian Steve Rannazzisi doesn’t know what it’s like.
He hasn’t suffered through four failed Super Bowl tries, the recent death of an owner who kept pro football in Buffalo, 14 straight playoff-less seasons and the prospect of an unstable future.
Rannazzisi may quibble about how Eli Manning doesn’t have the consistency of his older brother, but he’ll always…

It does not get much better than drinking Polish beer in a library that was built back in 1899.
That is exactly why the Buffalo Niagara 360 Happy Hour for a Cause to benefit Torn Space was such a hit this past Wednesday night.
The many people who stopped by the happy hour at the Adam Mickiewicz Library found all sorts of facts about how this little old building has a special…
On Tuesday, Buffalo was confronted with two bits of news that, at first glance, would seem like obvious April Fools’ Day jokes.
Donald Trump was announced to be interested in purchasing the Bills’ franchise?
I suppose once we finally done digesting Bon Jovi’s alleged-but-now-refuted interest, maybe we should have second-guessed our laughter at Donald Trump emerging on the scene.…
