GZA brings veteran hip-hop to Town Ballroom

blog by Kathryn Przybyla • October 15, 2012 @ 11:45am
A founding member of the seminal hip-hop group the Wu-Tang Clan, GZA/The Genius will be making an appearance in the Queen City this week.
GZA boasted some high-profile appearances on the group’s debut album, “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” including one of only two solo tracks, “Clan in da Front.” GZA’s 1995 solo effort, “Liquid Swords” was produced entirely by RZA and met with critical and commercial acclaim. It is largely considered one of the best albums to come out of the Wu-Tang camp.
In a 2010 interview with Slug Magazine, GZA has mixed feelings about how hip-hop has evolved today.
I think it’s positive and negative. It all depends on the method it’s given and the message that’s got. Hip hop was started to get kids off the streets, keep them outta gang violence. Then you flash forward thirty-something years later and you see all this violence in hip hop and you’re like, man it’s lost.
I’m not saying songs should be about go to school, get an education, learn to read, ‘cause it’s about delivery. Music should be delivered in a unique way. It should be clever. It should be fly. It should be hard. I think it should be gangsta.
GZA will be joined by Killer Mike and Bear Hands at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Town Ballroom. Tickets are available for $25 pre-sale through Tickets.com or the Town Ballroom box office. For more information on the show, check out Supernaut Productions’ website or the Town Ballroom’s website.
