Art-rock darling St. Vincent performs Saturday at Town Ballroom

blog by Ben Kirst • May 04, 2012 @ 10:14am
St. Vincent delayed is not St. Vincent denied, thanks to the swell gang at Funtime Presents.
Disappointment reigned when St. Vincent—the critically-acclaimed, guitar-seared indie rock project of Berklee School of Music dropout and former Polyphonic Spree cultist Annie Clark—cancelled a Buffalo performance earlier this year.
But no worries! The band was re-booked (thanks again, Funtime) and St. Vincent makes a triumphant return this weekend as part of a four-day buzz-band binge in Buffalo with a 7 p.m. show on Saturday at Town Ballroom (681 Main St., Buffalo). Tickets are $22 at the door. Shearwater will open.
AN ASIDE: Look at the strong lineup of acts coming through the city this weekend:
Friday - Mac Miller at Buffalo State College, Eskmo at Soundlab
Saturday - St. Vincent at Town Ballroom, Iron and Wine at Buffalo State College
Sunday - Schoolboy Q at Soundlab
Monday - M83 at Town Ballroom
And those are just the biggest shows! There’s also the Mark Freeland Electrorespect tribute, Tim Barry at Mohawk Place, even freaking Chicago at the Seneca Niagara Casino. If you aren’t getting out to a show or two this weekend, I don’t know what to say.
ANYHOW: St. Vincent is currently touring in support of 2011’s Strange Mercy, an album that scored a hefty 9.0 on Pitchfork and was described as “... (skipping) through art-rock touchstones from Talking Heads to Kate Bush to Peter Gabriel without relinquishing a bit of its originality.”
The Guardian noted that the record was a bit of a departure from St. Vincent’s first release, Marry Me (whose title was based on a running joke in Arrested Development—gotta love that) and breakthrough sophomore effort, Actor. “The strings and woodwind have been turned down in favour of a harder sound,” Molloy Woodcraft wrote, “dominated by off-kilter drums and queasy synths, with Clark’s electric guitar filling the gaps with intricate runs, riffs and fills.”
Expect a good show from Clark, who had a buzzworthy appearance at this year’s Coachella festivities. Young master Jonathan Pirro of SpinningPlatters.com was effusive in his praise of St.Vincent and billmates tUnE-yArDs (also coming to Buffalo this summer) following a recent performance in Oakland:
St. Vincent, and her fireworks display of a live performance, was an explosive and fascinating surprise…Both acts positively brought the house down, each offering their own world of music and welcoming those who were avid fans of an intriguing and mesmerizing display of indie rock, which nonetheless rang true with its own pop brilliance. These are the true queens of the modern music world, and their mission to take the world by storm has barreled through Oakland with a truly fantastic outcome.
