The Boundary Waters Treaty: Making a splash since 1909.
blog by Emily Stoll • June 17, 2011 @ 9:29am
It’s pretty darn hard to share things without arguments cropping up. Anyone can tell you, from kids fighting over TV channels to undergraduates sharing a room for the first time. But thanks to the Boundary Waters Treaty, the U.S. and Canada keep their peace.
There’s a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary of the treaty today, June 17, in Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York. They’re even unveiling a shiny new plaque at 11:25 a.m. in the Grand Oaks Ballroom, Marriott Gateway on the Falls. Grab your passport or enhanced license and head over to 6755 Fallsview Blvd., Niagara Falls, Ontario.
If you can’t get across the border, check out Centennial Circle in Niagara Falls, New York at 3:30 p.m. on the same day for the unveiling of a similar plaque.
The U.S. and Canada formed the Boundary Waters Treaty in 1909 in response to problems about navigation rights, pollution, diverting water for energy and more. With a few basic rules and the establishment of the International Joint Commission, which has three members from each country, this treaty has prevented conflict for more than a century over all shared waters, not just the Niagara River.
Celebrations have been annual events since the 2009 Centennial celebration, which was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, then-Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon, and the Canadian and U.S Chairs of the International Joint Commission, with several officials from federal, state, provincial and local levels. The event happened on the Rainbow Bridge, with the beautiful waters of the treaty boundary in the background.
Make sure you head over to one of the ceremonies today. To find out more about the Boundary Waters Treaty, check out their website.
