Buffalo’s ‘Hidden Homeless’ in plain sight

blog by S.J. Velasquez • January 03, 2013 @ 11:36am
There’s a misconception about the homeless that drums up mental images of haggard elderly beggars, but a new documentary challenges that notion while exposing an otherwise hidden population: Buffalo’s homeless youth.
“Hidden Homeless,” created by Mark Hall of Mouse Media Productions, in collaboration with the Western New York Coalition for the Homeless, will premiere Jan. 16 at a free screening at the WNED studios, 140 Lower Terrace in downtown Buffalo. The event is sponsored by Buffalo.com.
The documentary “tells the neglected story of youth homelessness in Buffalo,” according to the premiere’s Facebook event description.
The film documents the experiences of some of Buffalo’s nearly 1,500 homeless youth, many of whom must survive by living in train tunnels, abandoned homes and cars. The film also addresses the fact that some homeless youth are reduced to begging for money, stealing food or even selling their bodies.
