Carbon Leaf poised for the Tralf, probably won’t bring Katy Perry

Appearing in the Carbon Leaf music video “Learn to Fly” probably didn’t launch Katy Perry’s music career; in fact, her ascension had more to do with “kissing other girls and liking it,” I’d assume. Still, the five-piece uber-indie Virginia band—Carbon Leaf, not Katy Perry, if you were wondering—dropped its small record label last March in order to produce music more frequently. Carbon Leaf fans are not complaining.
Scheduled to perform an 8 p.m. show Wednesday at Tralf Music Hall, the band known for the song “Life less ordinary”—one of those songs you hear in the grocery store, find to be catchy and eventually look up—will feature tracks off its most recent album Live, Acoustic…and In Cinemascope!
The cozy venue should mesh nicely with Carbon Leaf’s relaxed, cheerful Celtic rock sound. Bound by the strictures of Vanguard Records, vocalist/acoustic guitarist Barry Privett became frustrated and searched for alternatives.
“We felt it was time to regain our autonomy and adopt a more aggressive release schedule than is allowed under a label system, and control our copyright on the material,” Privett told readjunk.com.
The band has followed through on its intentions, releasing three albums since the departure: How the West was One (July 2010), Christmas Child (Nov. 2010) and Live, Acoustic…and In Cinemascope! (May 2011).
Tickets are $12 pre-sale or $14 at the door.
