Get in the Halloween spirit a day early and dress as your favorite book character for Cocktails in Character at 6 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Marquis Ballroom inside the Hotel at the Lafayette, 391 Washington St., Buffalo.

Be creative and have fun with your costume choice! Past guests have dressed up as Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz characters. (Editor’s note: This is Ben T.‘s chance to dress up as Eeyore at a public event. Nice.)

If you’re struggling to choose a good costume—scantily-clad Aslan probably isn’t your best choice—check out photos from last year’s event or a list of suggested costumes. Prizes will be awarded to the guests with the best Halloween attire.

This event is Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara Inc.‘s annual fundraiser to raise finances for its one-on-one adult literacy center.

“Our mission is to open pathways to expand opportunities for adult learners and children by enhancing their literacy skills and nurturing their well-being. Our vision is to be an integral partner in the revitalization of our community,” states their website.

Guests will get to meet Buffalo author Timothy Bohen. Bohen wrote “Against The Green”; his book tells the story of a group of Irish immigrants who worked in waterfront industries in the First Ward of Buffalo. Guests will receive a complimentary signed copy of Bohen’s book.

The night will also include silent auctions, raffles and various carving stations, desserts by KupKate’s and a cash bar. VIP tickets can be purchased for $100, which will include hors d’ouerves, premium open bar, live entertainment and a tour of the hotel.

General tickets for Cocktails in Character are $50 and can be purchased online.

For more information about the event, visit their website.
