Fairport Girl Scouts meet First Lady Michelle Obama (again)
blog by Ben Kirst • May 29, 2012 @ 3:42pm
When I was in Cub Scouts, the most famous person I met was the guy who operated the ham radio out at Camp Merz. Not that impressive! The young ladies of Girl Scout Troop 60325 have a slightly shinier star sighting to remember when they grow old and cynical like me—First Lady Michelle Obama.
The scouts—based out of Fairport, a suburb of Rochester—were on ABC-TV’s The View today with Mrs. Obama as part of the publicity surrounding the first lady’s new book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens across America. The girls had previously met Mrs. Obama this past March in Washington, D.C. to participate in the 4th annual White House Kitchen Garden spring planting. The group is pictured above with the first lady at ABC/Disney Studios in New York City this morning.
Troop 60325 is currently growing 100 tomato plants, which will eventually be donated to Central New York residents who do not have access to healthy food. Mrs. Obama has made healthy eating and good nutrition habits a cornerstone of her time in the nation’s capital—probably not a bad idea for a country where childhood obesity has tripled over the past 30 years.
