Geico Gecko visits Buffalo

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •

I was skimming YouTube this morning when I came across a video blog featuring the Geico Gecko, the insurance company’s popular green spokeslizard, who’s apparently trekking across America.

Not only is the little green guy keeping a written blog, he’s also documenting his trip with videos and social media updates. He recently traveled through Buffalo, writing:

“Well, I had a great time eating Buffalo wings in Buffalo and I got to check out what I thought was one of the seven wonders of the world, Niagara Falls.  It turns out it’s not technically a wonder, but I still thought it was quite wondrous. I’m off to Rochester next, where my Facebook friends have told me to try something called a ... garbage plate?”

He also stopped by Anchor Bar, where he shared some wings with the restaurant’s executive chef and owner Ivano Toscani (see photo above, courtesy of the gecko’s Facebook page). The lizard left with some saucy souvenirs and posed in front of Gecko’s on Hertel Avenue before heading to Rochester.

I know, you’re probably thinking, “Why would I intentionally follow a blatant marketing campaign?” I can’t answer that, but I can tell you that the Geico Gecko has more than 202,000 Facebook fans and 8,000 Twitter followers tracking his cross-country trip.

The bottom photo actually made me laugh out loud. More of a hearty guffaw than a laugh, but still.
