Harbor of no cares: Great Big Sea in Buffalo

Canadian bands have thrived in Buffalo this summer—Lowest of the Low, Sloan and Tokyo Police Club represented the country to the fullest, drawing impressive crowds to the Erie Canal Harbor Wharf, the new site of Thursday at the Square.  Now, to cap off a summer that’s brought us together with our northern friends—before inevitably being separated again during Leafs vs. Sabres games in the coming months— Great Big Sea hits the harbor Saturday ($10 presale, $20 at the show).

Based in Newfoundland, Canada’s eastern most province if you’re not a geography wiz, Great Big Sea’s sound echoes positive themes—the three piece band is characterized by carefree lyrics and myriad of instruments, including the bodhran and the bouzouki

In fact, GBS’ singer and bodhran player Sean McCann will return to Buffalo on Sept. 30 for a solo show at Town Ballroom.  Tickets are already available for purchase

Saturday’s concert—after the runny makeup and boa constrictor poop are cleaned up from the Alice Cooper show—runs from 6 to 11 p.m, and the openers include local band McCarthyizm and Martin Sexton.  It’s the final Buffalo Place show of the summer, so we’re sending Nate Benson down with a pocket full of concession tickets (and sunshine) to give to concert-goers—as long as you appear in a Buffalo.com photo!
