Hoisting a stein at Waldfest today?

blog by Ben Kirst  •

Let’s not mince words about this: Waldfest, a German-American cultural celebration in Marilla, is about drinking beer. Yes, it absolutely pays homage to the wonder heritage of German people here in Western New York, and offers a fine opportunity for the descendants of Deutschland to get together, pull on the laderhosen and catch up on old times. But make no mistake—Waldfest is famous for beer. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

What exactly is Waldfest? Take it away, Facebook: “In the town of Marilla, every summer, thousands of Germans gather to celebrate their heritage by listening to German music, drinking German beer, and eating German food. This great celebration is know as Waldfest.” So there you go.

If you head out to the 37th annual Waldfest celebration from noon to 9 p.m. today at Spring Garden Park (3838 Two Rod Road, East Aurora), please keep in mind two things: 1.) drinking and driving is never OK, and 2.) you do have to make it back to work tomorrow. Otherwise, have a fantastic time. The Frankfurters and Auslanders will provide authentic German music beginning at 2 p.m. Food will be available for purchase. You can’t bring your own beverages. Admission at the gate is $12.

The caption for this photo: “My 4 year old son took some photos of the Waldfest in Buffalo when I couldn’t hold the camera anymore.” It’s that kind of party, people.
