Jimmy Fallon channels Jim Morrison channeling LeVar Burton

Screen shot from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Did anyone else have a childhood flashback when watching “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on Friday? With a spot-on impersonation of Jim Morrison, Fallon and his crew (dressed as members of the Doors) sang a cover of the “Reading Rainbow” theme song with complete swagger. From the tousled hair to rocking voice, Fallon was hitting the notes as only Morrison knew how.

What makes it even better was that Reading Rainbow was a WNED-TV Buffalo production in conjunction with GPN/Nebraska ETV Network. The show received an astonishing 26 Emmy Awards and was in production from 1983 to 2006.

I half expected LeVar Burton to come out on stage and regale us with some literary knowledge.

Although the show has been off the air for a few years, Burton has recently discussed a 21st century upgrade for the show—a multimedia-enhanced reading ecosystem for the iPad. I guess books are so last century.

Here’s the original version of the “Reading Rainbow” theme song:

And here’s an NPR story about the end of “Reading Rainbow,” including an interview with a WNED representative.

This is shockingly accurate.  I used to think Jim Morrison was about as deep as it got when I was in junior high.  Then I realized he was on a whole lot of drugs.
