(Second update, 12:30 p.m. Nov. 5—The concert date has now been switched from Dec. 6 to Friday, Dec. 7. Here’s proof!)
(Update: After Dark Entertainment announced Tuesday afternoon that, due to a scheduling conflict, Walk Off the Earth has delayed its Buffalo appearance until Dec. 6. All tickets purchased already will be honored on the new date.)
Walk Off the Earth’s emergence wouldn’t have been possible 20 years ago. Even though seemingly everyone and their third cousin has covered Gotye’s “Somebody that I Used to Know,” Walk Off the Earth simply covered the hit more creatively than anyone else.
Walk Off the Earth rolls into Town Ballroom at 7 p.m. Wednesday to perform close to the band’s city of origin—Burlington, Ontario. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased online or by calling the Ballroom at (888) 223-6000.
Welcome to the YouTube age of music, a time when the viral nature of media can catapult anyone with talent into the limelight. Walk Off the Earth, who caught the attention of Russell Crowe, the Ellen [DeGeneres] Show and even Gotye for the band’s five-musicians-on-one-guitar approach to covering the hit, has surpassed a staggering 137 million page-views.
Riding the furious wave of momentum that began in January, Walk Off the Earth will release its first EP of original music on Oct. 30. Fortunately for Buffalonians, the five-piece band will play a solid amount of new material from the EP, Inside Halton reports.
“There have been so many misadventures,” singer Sarah Blackwood told Spinner in an interview that was referenced by the Huffington Post. “I’ve been hit in the face with a ukulele. We’ve broken things, we’ve thrown them up and not had our catchers there and they’ve been destroyed on the floor, all of that stuff has happened. There’s always mishaps and things that break, but eventually in the end I think we’ve always gotten it.”
It’s easy to develop a weak spot in your heart for YouTube success stories, and you’ll get to see one firsthand Wednesday.
