LCD Soundsystem documentary to be screened in Buffalo - one night only

I was never a huge LCD Soundsystem fan but was genuinely impressed by the outpouring of emotion that oozed from the Internet when James Murphy decided to pull the plug on his New York-based dance-punk project. For nine years, Murphy and LCD Soundsystem served as both droll commentators and active participants in the mainstream emergence of electronic dance music. When the decision was made to break up the band following a farewell concert on April 2, 2011 at Madison Square Garden, a lot of people were legitimately upset.
Cheer up! You can see LCD Soundsystem again. Well, sort of. The documentary detailing the final 48 hours of the band, Shut Up and Play The Hits, is coming to Buffalo courtesy of Supernaut Booking. The 8 p.m. screening on Wednesday, July 18 (one night only!) at Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre (639 Main St., Buffalo) will be shown in high definition. Tickets go on sale for $10 on Wednesday at SupernautProductions.com.
Directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace (the duo best known for their Blur documentary, No Distance Left to Run) and distributed by the late Adam Yauch’s Oscilloscope Laboratories, Shut Up and Play The Hits was a crowd-pleaser at the SXSW and Sundance Film Festivals. Rolling Stone noted that, at the jam-packed SXSW screening, “...some audience members literally couldn’t sit still for the duration of the screening and took to the aisles during the live numbers. It was hard to fault them…Twice, the audience burst into applause after songs.”
Nathan Rabin of avclub.com summed up the film beautifully: “Shut Up And Play The Hits captures a performer at the very peak of his powers, in full command of his craft. The film periodically cuts to audience members on the verge of what could be either tears of joy or tears of sadness; both responses are appropriate, since Shut Up And Play The Hits is both a climax and a finale, a cause for celebration and a cause for sadness.”
