Limber up, kids: Yeasayer is coming to Buffalo

It’s going to be a dance party when the buzzy Brooklyn electro-pop combo Yeasayer—fresh off a July jaunt through Europe—comes to town for a 7 p.m. show on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at Town Ballroom (681 Main St., Buffalo). Advance tickets are $20.
Yeasayer (composed of the trio of Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton and Anand Wilder) is currently touring in support of its new record, Fragrant World, which is scheduled for release on Monday, Aug. 20. The new work was described by MTVhive.com as “...dark, weird R&B-tinged effort that treads into territories uncharted while still retaining the band’s trademark mythological/secretly gloomy style,” which seems to toe the line between compliment and confusion quite carefully.
On the less-ambiguously positive side, Mark Beaumont of The Guardian (UK) praised Yeasayer’s recent concert performance at The Lexington in London. “They combined the Rapture’s dancefloor funk with MGMT’s psychedelia and the manic world music of Animal Collective,” Beaumont wrote. “Those bright shards of Duran Duran, Red Box, the Thompson Twins and Wax, often sunk beneath oceans of Indian and Shinto synth trickery on their albums, leap to the fore when played live…The tracks from the forthcoming third album Fragrant World, which dominate the set, might sound like music melting, but they leave a luminescent puddle, oozing the warmth and humanity of the finest electro.”
If nothing else, this show should be a body-moving good time for all in attendance. Yeasayer is a band built on dance pop and icy funk—they translates well when pumped through pulsating speakers in a hot, crowded club. It’s not for nothing that Yeasayer was one of the bands selected to perform on the S.S. Coachella in December—if you’re going to party on the ocean with 2,800 people, you want a party band. right? And despite their occasional forays into dark introspection, Yeasayer will get your feet (and other body parts) moving. Worth checking out on a Wednesday night.
