Lining up the Live at Larkin concerts

Western New York offers an abundance of cheap live music during the summer months, especially Buffalo Place’s free Thursday at the Harbor season, the Buffalo Place Rocks the Harbor series, Artpark’s weekly Tuesday and Wednesday shows, the Molson Canal Concert Series and Bidwell Park’s Tuesday night concerts through the Elmwood Village Association.
Aside from Bidwell, most of these summer concert promoters book out-of-town bands, relegating talented local artists to opening acts—if they’re allotted any stage time at all.
There’s little wrong with this approach, as Buffalo’s music fans are excited by the once-a-year (at most) opportunity to see a specific nationally-known band.
Still, if Buffalo wants to show pride in its homegrown talent, featuring budding local artists makes sense regardless of the season or the venue.
The second year of the Live at Larkin concert series places a huge emphasis on local music, inviting bands like the Albrights, the Tins, Son of the Sun, Peter Case and Aqueous to showcase their talents in one of Buffalo’s up and coming districts: Larkinville.
Concerts run from 5 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday beginning June 19 at the corner of Seneca and Swan streets in downtown Buffalo, and the shows are free to attend. All of the Larkin District restaurants—The Grill, Square 1 Sandwiches and The Filling Station vend food, while a number of food trucks often participate as well.
Nearly 3,000 people gathered together on at Larkin Square for “South Buffalo Night” on Aug. 8, 2012, the series’ highest attendance in the first summer of shows. Here’s the 2013 Live at Larkin schedule as released by the Good Neighborhood on Tuesday.
