Lovedrug renewal

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • April 07, 2012 @ 7:00am
It’s been a bumpy road back to prominence for Ohio-based rock band Lovedrug, whose indie label declared bankruptcy on the same day the band released its third album in October 2008. The four-piece band hasn’t quite returned to opening for bands like the Killers, Coheed and Cambria, and Switchfoot, but this solo tour may propel them back into the conversation.
Lovedrug shuffles up to Buffalo to headline After Dark Entertainment’s 6 p.m. Easter Sunday show at Mohawk Place. Tickets run for $10, and the openers on the bill include Elmwood Drive, I’m Happiest When, Brother Keep and Voice of Autumn.

Guided by lead singer Michael Shepard’s very distinctive voice—slightly whiny and slurred, but not grating—the band is touring in support of “Wild Blood,” its first album free from record label control. As a result, there’s a greater sense of identity and ownership for the band with the March-released album.
“It’s like getting back to the roots of how the band was when it started, which is just writing songs we enjoy,” Shepard said to Vindy.com’s John Benson. “So this album is more in the alternative sort of vein, and this is more a live feeling. It’s just good, old-fashioned rock.”
