Collision: A Massive Summer Celebration planned at Albright-Knox

The Albright-Knox has the night fever, night fever...

blog by Ben Kirst  •

Once upon a time, people used to refer to the 1970s as a cultural wasteland—all mindless disco, bad game shows and AMC Gremlins. Maybe after the utter explosiveness of the 1960s, the ‘70s felt like a bit of a letdown. The walls of society were torn down for what? So the world could be safe for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders to appear on The Love Boat?

As time passed, however, the truth became more clear: the 1970s were a wildly colorful ride, full of vibrant art, new voices and a subversive twist of the revolutionary into the mainstream. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery has celebrated the local angle of this fascinating era with its ongoing Wish You Were Here: The Buffalo Avant-Garde in the 1970s exhibition, and will kick out the jams with Collision: A Massive Summer Celebration at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 21.

The party will take place at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (1285 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo) and will include “retro” gourmet food—pineapple cheeseballs, we hope!—as well as an open bar from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., a hip-shaking mix of punk, funk and disco and even a chance to do the hustle on the actual dance floor created by Buffalo’s own Litelab for use in the 1977 classic Saturday Night Fever.

Tickets aren’t cheap—a cool $150—but proceeds support the best damn modern art gallery this side of Manhattan. For more information or to place your funky, funky order, visit the Albright-Knox online.
