Matt Nathanson + Vanessa Carlton: is it hot in here or is it them?

blog by Ben Kirst • October 04, 2011 @ 10:37am
Look at this handsome couple coming to our fair city— Matt Nathanson and Vanessa Carlton will visit Buffalo for a 7 p.m. show on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Town Ballroom (681 Main St., Buffalo) as part of Nathanson’s All Night Noise 2011 tour. There may not be a better-looking bill in the city this year.
Nathanson is a familiar face in Western New York, having played WTSS-FM’s Starry Night in the Garden and the Niagara Falls (NY) Hard Rock Cafe in recent years. The masses probably know Nathanson from “Come On Get Higher,” a platinum-selling single from his 2008 album Some Mad Hope, but he actually has cobbled together a fairly extensive career—Nathanson released his first record, Please, in 1993 and spent 10 years toiling on the California singer-songwriter circuit before getting a little heat for 2003’s Beneath These Fireworks.
Nathanson’s career is classic 21st century in the sense that his accessible, introspective music serves as the perfect soundtrack for television dramas. His work has appeared on shows ranging from Scrubs to Private Practice—imagine the music you’d hear as a boyishly attractive young man struggles over a life-altering relationship decision, and you can hear Matt Nathanson. Plus, he’s a good-looking dude with a pompadour that looks as though it was sculpted by Michelangelo himself. The man has good hair, people!
Vanessa Carlton will open for Nathanson at Town Ballroom, and she’s tasted legitimate stardom in her own right—her debut album, Be Not Nobody, sold over 1 million copies. While she has not matched the commercial power of that first disc, her subsequent work has been well-received by critics and fans and Carlton should be commended for stretching her artistic boundaries. Her latest record, Rabbits on the Run, is heavily influenced by the written work of Stephen Hawking and Richard Adams.
Carlton is also quite easy on the eyes, gentlemen—and ladies, I should add, because Vanessa is comfortable swinging with the guys and the gals, according to a 2010 interview. Sexy!
Tickets for the show are available at Town Ballroom or Tickets.com.
