If you are a rock radio listener in Western New York, you’re probably familiar with Sloan. The Halifax quartet’s 1996 single “The Good In Everyone” has been a ubiquitous addition to Buffalo’s 103.3 WEDG-FM and Hamilton’s 97.7 HTZ-FM lineups since its release, and a series of other Sloan tunes, both older and younger—“Underwhelmed,” “Money City Maniacs,” “If It Feels Good, Do It,” among others—have had their time in the local spotlight, as well. Sloan’s tours hit our region on an annual and sometimes biannual basis, including free shows at Artpark, the Hard Rock Cafe and Thursday at the Harbor (see our photos from that show) in recent years. If you haven’t come into contact with the band in some way, shape or form, you’re just not trying very hard.

Sloan will be back in town for a 7 p.m. show on Friday at The Tralf (622 Main St., Buffalo) as part of their Twice Removed tour, so named due to the fact that the band will play their 1994 album, Twice Removed—“the album that almost killed the band,” according to a recent article in The Chicagoist—in its entirety, along with other fan favorites. So did Twice Removed nearly knock Sloan—who had been a critical darling at a time when rock bands still mattered—back into Canadian obscurity? More from The Chicagoist:

While the band’s music was noisy and, yes, sonically smeared, what differentiated them…was a healthy serving of jangling hummability buried under all those guitars.The band’s sophomore album, Twice Removed, brought those melodies to the fore and dialed back the guitars to create a work that was leaner and crisper but no less powerful. Unfortunately this new approach didn’t sit well with the airwaves at the time and Geffen offered the band almost no support, causing an album that was once picked as the #1 Canadian album of all time to slip by almost completely unnoticed in the U.S., sending the band into a nosedive.

But they bounced back! Rock fans are luckier for it. The Tralf, by the way, has added an interesting twist to this show: you can actually meet Sloan when they pay their visit on Friday.
