Mutemath slinks to Town Ballroom tonight

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • October 04, 2012 @ 9:13am
There’s something alluring about sharply-dressed bands playing in Buffalo, especially with the coincidence it presented when new wave-electro outfit Mutemath showed up to Mohawk Place with vests, freshly-pressed white dress shirts and bow ties. In the dozen times I’ve been to Mohawk Place, I’ve seen bands in ripped jeans, gym shorts, tank-tops and the typical dive-bar-concert-venue apparel.
The dapper quartet, which reminds me a little of Young the Giant in terms of attire, plays at 7 tonight at Town Ballroom, a bit of a leap in venue grandeur for the Grammy-nominated group. The opener is Civil Twilight, the show is presented by After Dark Entertainment and tickets are $23 either online or at the door.
Harkening back to Deandra Modica’s concert review from last fall’s show at Mohawk, Mutemath entertained from start to finish. The band literally paraded to the stage, guided by the beat of tambourines and drums, and lead members Paul Meany (vocals, keyboard) and Darren King (drums) stood on the piano at times, too.
The Buffalo News’ Jeff Miers seems particularly pumped about the arrival of Mutemath, who was supposed to open for Jane’s Addiction this past summer at Artpark but couldn’t make its scheduled appearance.
Led by the effervescent Paul Meany on keys and vocals, the 2012 edition of Mutemath - with new guitarist Todd Gummerman in tow - boasts a lot more trippy blues-rock attitude and psychedelic sheen than earlier versions of the band were capable of conjuring, as evidenced by the most recent effort, “Odd Soul.”
