For many Buffalonians, Thanksgiving is a time for feasting and indulgence. I’m sure that more than a few belt buckles are unhinged after Turkey Day in the Queen City.  However, there are some Buffalonians that aren’t fortunate to have more than enough food during the holiday season.  In fact, this recent Buffalo News article pointed to the glaring problems of hunger and homelessness in the Nickel City.

To combat the issue of hunger in Buffalo, the Food Bank of Western New York is teaming up with Town Ballroom (681 Main St.) on Friday for the “Feed the City” benefit concert; the show starts at 6 p.m. The concert features a wide variety of local, national and international acts that promise to satisfy every rock fan’s desire.  Here’s a quick rundown of the different acts:

The Pillagers: Native sons of Buffalo, this quintet has been described as “a conscious band with a conscience.”  The group believes in giving back to the local and global communities through its music, participating in several benefits besides “Feed the City.”

Willie Nile: Nile, or Robert Noonan as his own mother knows him, is another native of the Queen City.  Nile has worked with artists such as Elvis Costello, Ringo Starr and the Barenaked Ladies. His music has been classified as “good ol’ street-tough rock ‘n’ roll.”

Two Cow Garage: Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, this rock band has been together since 2001.  Since then, they have released five albums, the most recent of which is Sweet Saint Me, released in 2010.  Loyal followers of the band have realized that the group has slowly forged its own sound on the most recent record. Jesse Malin & St. Marks Social: Malin is another New York native, although he is not specifically from the Queen City (we’ll try not to hold it against him).  With a solo career that started in the 1980s, Malin formed Jesse Malin & St. Marks Social in 2010.  Soon after, the band released its first album as a group, Love It To Life.

The Ruby Spirit: This Canadian quintet is fairly new to the rock scene, with their first record, Born Under a Veil, released in 2010. However, the band has quickly garnered support from credible sources; the group was hand-picked by Virgin mogul Sir Richard Branson as one of the top five ‘Best Indie Bands’ in Canada.

The Scorched Earthlings: An upstart group, The Scorched Earthlings are an emerging band that, according to their Facebook page, is extremely excited for the gig at Town Ballroom.

Ron Hawkins and the Do-Good Assassins:  Ron Hawkins takes some time away from Canada’s legendary indie band, Lowest of the Low, to perform with another project, Ron Hawkins and the Do-Good Assassins.  Together, the Do-Good Assassins describe themselves as “not a band, but a joining of two separate and somewhat distinct artists.”
