SantaCon invades Buffalo

blog by Kathryn Przybyla • December 15, 2011 @ 7:29am
Niagara Square is about to be occupied—not by grassroots activists, but by Santas. The Santa Convention, more appropriately known as “SantaCon” has been celebrated in more than 200 cities and 29 countries around to world, and now it’s coming to Buffalo. Beginning at noon this Saturday at Niagara Square, SantaCon will kick off the Christmas holiday a week early.
Attendees are required to Santa-suit it up when it comes to attire for the celebration, and throwing a Santa hat on with your with your mini-dress won’t cut it. Creativity is encouraged and event organizers have even suggested a few options. Why don’t you try biker Santa, Malibu Santa, doctor Santa, terminator reindeer or Hanukkah Harry? The possibilities are endless.
Following the legendary gathering of Santas that will take place at noon, a North Pole stroll will commence at 1 p.m. With a SantaCon wristband—which can be registered online for $10—you will receive free admittance to participating establishments down Chippewa offering food and drink specials all day. Proceeds from the registration fee will go toward the Boys & Girls Club of Black Rock. Local food trucks will also be on hand to relieve the hunger pangs of jolly old St. Nick impersonators everywhere.
For those looking for a more family-friendly approach to SantaCon, after the initial gathering at Niagara Square, families are encouraged to head over to the Niagara Holiday Market for free ice skating—as long as one person in the family/party is dressed as Santa. This is sure to be quite the interesting event for inebriated college kids and families alike.
But if all those Santa-wannabes weren’t enough for you, there is another Buffalo Santa Pub crawl taking place on the same day throughout Allentown. Proceeds for this event are being donated to Carly’s Club, and the registration fee is also $10. The start time for this event is a little later at 6:30 p.m. beginning at Fat Bob’s. The slogan? “No beards, no belly, no boots, no service!”
