Superior Donuts rolls into Buffalo

blog by Road Less Traveled Productions • November 09, 2011 @ 6:00am
The Western New York premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts’ newest work, Superior Donuts, will hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 11th, 2011at the Road Less Traveled Theatre (639 Main St., Buffalo).
Superior Donuts is Letts’ first work since the 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, August: Osage County, which also won the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best New Play. The play premiered in Chicago in 2008 and ran on Broadway through 2010.
Superior Donuts follows aging hippie Arthur Przybyszewski, who is every bit as decrepit as the donut joint he operates and every bit as depressed as the rough mixed neighborhood that is home to the eponymous shop.
Enter Franco Wicks, an idealistic young black man intent on helping Arthur change the shop – and maybe even the neighborhood – for the better.

Letts started his theater career as an actor with Chicago’s prestigious Steppenwolf Theatre. He began writing plays in 1991 and has since authored August: Osage County, Bug (which he also adapted into the 2006 feature film directed by William Friedkin and starring Michael Shannon and Ashley Judd), The Man from Nebraska and Killer Joe.
The Buffalo production will star Steve Jakiel, Barry Williams, Gerry Maher, Victoria Perez, Carlton Franklin, Jermain Cooper, Stan Klimecko and Aaron Krygier and will be directed by Scott Behrend.
“Superior Donuts will strike a chord with Buffalonians, who can recognize and relate to everyday concerns,” Behrend said. “Looking out for your neighbors, trying to improve the area you live in, and—most of all—enjoying a delicious box of fresh donuts.”
