Thursday at the Square harbor-bound for 2012

Grace Potter’s dynamic June 23 show last year signaled the end of an era for Buffalo Place’s Thursday at the Square. Beginning with Lowest of the Low, the free concerts bolted to a new setting—the Erie Canal Harbor Wharf—for the season’s remaining eight shows.
According to a Rachel Kingston’s WIVB report, Buffalo Place will keep the Thursday concerts at the harbor for the 2012 season. The lineup will be announced May 23 with the debut show scheduled for June 7. Hopefully it involves the return of Grace Potter.
“If you think of Thursday at the Square at Lafayette Square: great memories,” said Buffalo Place Executive Director Michael Schmand to Kingston. “But how many people would be a promoter that would say, ‘Well, in the middle of this concert, let’s put a monument up?’ ‘Let’s have a trolley running back and forth.’ So, I think this was a natural move.”
Don’t get me wrong—I thought concerts at Lafayette Square held a certain charm, and with the renovation of the Lafayette Hotel adding energy to that block, I’m not so sure this decision was simple for Buffalo Place. Still, the sightlines are much better at the harbor, there’s considerably more space and even those delightful pastel lawn chairs add a nice touch. We’re not going to complain when a popular event is positioned at the waterfront, so you won’t see us in fisticuffs.
So, can we officially change the name to Thursday at the Harbor? TATH doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as TATS, for some reason.

As much as I will miss walking through the rivers of gutter beer on Broadway and Clinton, I applaud this decision by Buffalo Place. The series has outgrown the Square.
I hope bigger space means bigger acts…. there was something really cool about watching a band perform with City Hall in the background. I wish they had at least one concert there or another 4th of july at Niagara Square.
