Where you think you’re going, baby? - INTERVIEW

blog by Kathryn Przybyla • June 01, 2012 @ 8:15am
The Canadian pop-princess has arrived.
After a career changing move with Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen’s career has taken off, with no signs of stopping anytime soon. After placing third in the fifth season of Canadian Idol, the 26 year-old has blown up, especially after landing a hit single with “Call Me Maybe.” This track is the first song by a Canadian artist to reach the top of the digital charts since Bieber’s “Baby” back in 2010.
Never fear, Buffalo. It looks like this girl has a lot more talent and staying power than her Canadian predecessor, Avril Lavigne. Jepsen will be headlining Kiss the Summer Hello this Saturday at Coca-Cola field. You can find our more information about the show in this week’s Queen City Cadence.
We chatted about her upcoming trip to Buffalo, hot wings and toasting champagne after hearing her single on the radio for the first time. Take a look at the interview below.
Tell us about how you first got started in music.
Carly Rae Jepsen: Well, my family loves music. My Dad used to play guitar for us before bed and I would sing along to all the classics, like James Taylor and Van Morrison. I was seven the first time I entered my first singing contest and I remember deciding that night that I would spend my life doing this.
What were your expectations in auditioning for Canadian Idol?
CRJ: I had no expectations. It was my high school drama teacher who bribed me into going. She literally drove me to the audition. Each week that I wasn’t eliminated was a pleasant surprise. I ended up placing third and that really launched my Canadian career.
Give us the back story on your hit song, “Call Me Maybe.”
CRJ: The song was a collaboration between Tavish Crowe, Josh Ramsay and myself. It’s basically a pick up. I like the idea that you should be brave in love. Stick your neck out on the line. I’ve never actually asked a guys for his number before, but I have done a kiss and run.
What was it like to hear the song on the radio for the first time?
CRJ: It’s always a thrill to hear a new song play on the radio for the first time. I was at home in Canada when I first heard “Call Me Maybe.’ My roommate and I were told it was going to play, so we dialed it to the right station and toasted with champagne when it came on.
Besides your hit single, what other songs are you excited to share with your fans?
CRJ: Well, my newest record isn’t all the way finished yet, so it’s hard to tell my favorites. I am excited about “Guitar String/Wedding Ring,” Curiousity” and “Didn’t Just Come Here to Dance.”
How has working with Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun been?
CRJ: They opened the door to the rest of the world for me. I had been working my whole life to create a career in Canada and all of the sudden, I’m touring the world. It’s a dream come true.
Who are some artists that inspire you?
CRJ: I love Feist, John Mayer, Robyn and Tegan and Sara.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
CRJ: I am really looking forward to all of the travelling. So far I have visited London, Germany, Paris, Australia and New Zealand. I can’t wait to keep exploring and writing and I hope to write songs that last and really mean something to people.
Will you be grabbing any wings while you’re in town?
CRJ: I’m excited to visit Buffalo for what will be my first time ever. Bring on the wings. I like them hot. I truly cannot wait. It’s fun to write and record, but the rush of a live crowd, well, there’s really nothing like it.
What are some of your favorite songs to sing in the shower?
CRJ: These three are good belters. “All Of Me” by Ella Fitzgerald, “We Are Young” by Fun and “Sorry” by Tracy Chapman.
