With movie, double-album on horizon, Coheed and Cambria flying high

By the time September arrives, most major bands are concluding summer tours, whistling through college venues, hibernating in studio or taking a breather. Progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria—headed to Buffalo on Wednesday—is a major exception.
Lead singer Claudio Sanchez just recently signed a contract with Mark Wahlberg’s Leverage Productions to take his musical concept albums—which span releases since 2002—to film. Since he’s already penned over 10 issues of a comic book series, “The Amory Wars,” and pushed out a hardcover book, Sanchez is taking the next logical step.
Coheed and Cambria heads to Town Ballroom for a 7 p.m. show Wednesday. Three is the opener, and tickets cost $30.
Coinciding the Sanchez’s plans to test the cinema is the October release of part one of a double album called “Afterman: Ascension.” The follow-up part, “Afterman: Descension,” will complement the first release in February 2013. While considering a two-part album for quite some time, the lead singer wasn’t without hesitation in his chat with Billboard.com:
“My struggle with making it a double album is I set the bar sort of high; when I think of a double album, I think of ‘The Wall.’ I always kind of second-guess myself going through this process; are we making a double album because we’re making a statement or because we just have too much material and know we’re going for quantity over quality? That’s how I feel about a lot of double albums.
According to the same Billboard article, Sanchez anticipates playing one song from the upcoming album on the present tour: “The Defiance.”
Concerning the Amory Wars’ transformation from comic book to movie, the plans are still in the early stages, Sanchez says.
I think what we’ve been trying to do is find actors and directors that are interested in the material, who are maybe fans of the material, to see if there’s any interest in getting involved. So we’re just really starting from the ground and working our way up. We’re still in the initial stages.”
With energy and expectation surrounding the band’s coming moves, it’s fair to expect a solid tour.
