WNY’s own Kristen Wiig leads “Bridesmaids” to box office success

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •

Kristen Wiig didn’t even realize she had a notable sense of humor growing up in Western New York. Wiig, who graduated from Brighton High School in Rochester, had no comedy experience before making her way to L.A., where she worked in retail before committing to comedy.

An Associated Press story published in Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle explains that Wiig caught the acting bug in college, so she packed up and moved to California to pursue her dreams, which were nearly shattered upon her realization that she had no real acting experience. Comedy wasn’t on her mind at the time, she said. Wiig was surprised to see that old high school friends even mentioned her humor in yearbook notes, she added.

“Thought, what the hell am I doing? I had no experience, and this city is filled with people who have experience and who are trying and going out there and auditioning and taking classes and doing plays. And I was like, ‘I took Acting 101. Hi, L.A.! I’m ready to be discovered!’ Which didn’t really happen,” Wiig said in the story.

Wiig eventually joined the Groundlings, an improv comedy troupe known for feeding shows like SNL. Wiig, herself, joined the SNL cast, and the rest is history.

WNY’s Wiig co-wrote and is starring in “Bridesmaids,” which is earning critical acclaim for breaking down traditional gender boundaries in comedy. That’s a fancy way of saying women can also pull of wicked fart jokes, too.
