Catching up: your weekend sports cheat sheet

blog by Spencer Trotman • February 18, 2013 @ 10:13am
Busy this weekend? Miss the latest happenings from the local sports teams? Here’s a quick cheat sheet for you to get caught up:
Buffalo Bills: The Buffalo Bills made a few transactions over the weekend to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season. Maybe the biggest move was when the Bills released former Pro Bowler Terrence McGee. McGee struggled with knee problems over the last few seasons. Buffalo signed two players: former Bills 2012 practice player QB Aaron Corp and OL Hutch Eckerson. Eckerson was an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in 2011. Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson resigned with the Bills with a contract that could earn him up to $4.5 million in 2013, according to ESPN. In other news, regional draft combines started on Saturday and will continue through mid-March.
Buffalo Sabres: Over the weekend, the Buffalo Sabres split the two games they played with one win and one loss. The Sabres dominated the tough Boston Bruins in the third period to earn the 4-2 win on Friday. The major contribution of struggling stars Drew Stafford and Tyler Myers pushed the Sabres to victory. The team didn’t have much luck against the Pittsburgh Penguins, though, as Buffalo lost by a final score of 4-3, allowing two late-game goals in defeat. The Sabres remain mired in the Northeast Division cellar with a 6-9-1 record and will play the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, Feb 19 at First Niagara Center in Buffalo.
Niagara University basketball: The Niagara University men’s basketball team bounced back from their tight loss against Canisius with two strong road wins over the weekend. Tahjere McCall had a game-high of 20 points to lead the Purple Eagles over the Marist Red Foxes, 57-54. Niagara was victorious against the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday as Juan’ ya Green had a game-high 18 points and Marvin Jordan added 16 points. Niagara remains in first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with the two wins, boasting a 16-11 record overall and a 12-4 mark in MAAC play. The Purple Eagles lead Loyola (Md.) by one game and will play non-conference opponent Northwestern State on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston.
Canisius College basketball: The Canisius College men’s basketball team won over the weekend in an Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game against the St. Peter’s Peacocks. Harold Washington had a team-high 16 points and Josiah Heath contributed nine points and six rebounds. The Griffs only turned the ball over nine times in their 68-59 win. Canisius is now 17-10 overall and 10-6 in the MAAC, good for third place and two games behind conference-leading Niagara. The Griffs play in a Bracketbuster matchup against Vermont on Saturday, Feb 23 in Buffalo.
Buffalo Bandits: The Buffalo Bandits snapped their two-game losing streak against the Rochester Knighthawks. It was a tight fourth quarter, and then Chad Culp scored with three minutes left to seal the game. The Bandits won, 14-13, and are now in second place in the East Division of the National Lacrosse League with a 4-3 record. Buffalo plays on the road against the East Division-leading Toronto Rock on Thursday, Feb 28.
