The Buffalo Zoo’s new polar cub didn’t wait long before becoming an international sensation. The fact that she hasn’t appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman” yet astounds us.

Regardless, the temporary name of “Luna” will not do. Honestly, it makes us think of Luna Lovegood, the bright-yet-aloof “Harry Potter” character. We can’t have those kind of associations connected with Buffalo’s prized polar bear cub.

The Buffalo Zoo has announced its “Name Our Cub” Facebook poll that runs through March 31. Enter at the link in the previous sentence. (Update: The entire list of names suggested on Facebook will be presented to the Buffalo Zoo’s bearkeepers, who will then narrow the pool to five. Then there will be another round of Facebook voting. When the zoo announced the naming process its Facebook page, commenters wasted little time in lending suggestions—but, at least from our standpoint, the initial replies left a lot to be desired:

Maybe workable: Anyu, Ciel, Noel, Aurora, Esperanza, Storm.
Probably wouldn’t work: Alice, Vanilla, Buffy, Carrie, Coconut, Turbo.
Embarrassing: Snow White, Whitey, Fluffernutter, Ursula, Oreo, Mary-bear-y, Snowflake, Gunky, Honey Bun, Snuggle, Fuzzy Paws and several others. Sheesh, Buffalo.

Things you should consider before you submit a name:

1) The cub is a female, so it should be a name that makes sense for a female.
2) Anything that’s a play off of “white” is probably out of the question.
3) If you’re advocating the name of a Disney character, you should reconsider.
