A half-hour drive up Queen Elizabeth Way was all that separated Buffalo.com and Winging It Buffalo Style from the Niagara Falls Curling Club, and Katie, Kat and Ben T. were eager to soundly defeat Allie, Zach and Matt from the WIVB affiliate in an unfamiliar sport.

Club manager Duane Smith first thoroughly described the scoring rules, throwing techniques and handy tips that determine success in curling, an Olympic sport that’s immensely popular in Canada but a relative afterthought in the United States. You’ll have to wait until Thursday to read the whole story and see the video clip on Winging It, but we shot a solid number of teaser Instagram photos to build the suspense:

It was impressively sunny outside, but Kat and Katie still demanded a photo in front of the Niagara Falls Curling Club’s logo.

The building may be nondescript on the outside, but it’s cavernous inside, as two flags and two emblems loom high above the ice, which is divided into six separate sections to allow several games to take place simultaneously.

Don’t think for a second that either media team took the Presidents’ Day jaunt north of the border lightly. Both teams were limber and focused before the showdown, with Buffalo.com offering much more humor and cheer. Bear in mind that Kat and Katie humbly put themselves at a disadvantage by both wearing heeled boots to the curling club—the first curlers in the rink’s history to play with heels, Smith speculated.

We stared down from above at the wily veterans competing before us, and their sweepers were nimble, their throwers smooth and their rocks were accurate. We could only hope to emulate their experience and master the sport on the fly. (Warning: the sport wasn’t mastered by either team).
