Creepy clown or bloody zombie? Prom of the Dead awaits

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • October 15, 2012 @ 11:50am
America’s growing fascination with zombies was reinforced by the return of the AMC series the Walking Dead, which sparked a recent social media frenzy nationally and locally. As Halloween approaches, the mock zombies on Elmwood and Allen proliferate in number, emphasizing the gory and futuristic themes of the movement.
Zombies, terrifying clowns—frankly, I think all clowns are terrifying—and other costumed Coney Island-themed partiers will congregate at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Dnipro Ukrainian Cultural Center for the Prom of the Dead, an event presented by Torn Space Theater.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 day-of, and they can be purchased here. If you want to avoid the service fee, tickets can be purchased by cash at Rust Belt Books, 202 Allen St.; Talking Leaves at 951 Elmwood Ave. and 3158 Main St.; Second Chic at 810 Elmwood Ave.; Terrapin Station at 1172 Hertel Ave. and any of Torn Space Theater’s productions. Nearly 300 people have already confirmed on Facebook, so you know this is a pretty big deal.
Not certain what to wear to a Coney Island party? Here’s a link for some ideas—as you’ll quickly notice, they’re pretty non-traditional Halloween garb. There’s always trusty zombie attire if your creative ability is lacking or you’re a procrastinator.
Even if a dance party isn’t quite your thing, an hour of open bar between 9 and 10 p.m. should loosen up the mood, while a host of DJs will entertain throughout the evening. Master of Ceremonies will be James Wild, while projectionist Brian Milbrand will illuminate tunes by Dr. Know, Keith Harrington (aka PROJEX), Rev. Johnny Drama, Money$nake and Handsome Dan.
