I don’t want any of your excuses, Buffalo. Designated Drivers of Buffalo once again offers free services to get both you and your car home safely during the wee morning hours of New Year’s Day.

For the last four years, Designated Drivers has given lifts to the inebriated, and the tradition continues for the first few hours of 2013.

Here’s how it works: Go out and have a good time on New Year’s Eve. After the ball drops and you’re sufficiently tipsy, call Designated Drivers at 716-713-7703. Wait at the decided spot where a team of two drivers will meet you. One driver will drive you home, and the other driver will deliver your car safely home.

“We give people the no-excuse answer to drinking and driving because we get their cars home, too,” Designated Drivers CEO Mike Mulé said. “We’ll do our best to make sure you have fun and be safe.”

Requests for free rides home must originate in downtown Buffalo between midnight and 4 a.m. New Year’s Day, Mulé said. Calls are processed on a first-come-first-served basis, so call a little in advance of the ideal pick-up time.

Last year, Designated Drivers served approximately 100 riders, and Mulé expects more requests to come in this year. In order to respond to additional calls, he does need more drivers. Anyone who would like to participate as a DD can contact him up until Monday afternoon.

If you’re not ringing in 2013 downtown, or you and your car need a lift outside of the no-cost-to-you timeframe, you can still call Designated Drivers to make a reservation. This service does cost money, but it’s a safe, smart bet compared the completely illegal alternative. Designated Drivers is a year-round business devoted to getting locals and their vehicles home safely.

If you do get a free lift home from Designated Drivers, remember to tip your drivers. Mulé said that drivers do get paid for driving, but they’re giving up their own holiday to help others. Generous tips are extremely appreciated.
