Fall gluttony: Buffalo Chili Fest set for Sunday

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

After sampling Campbell’s Kickin’ Buffalo-Style Chicken Soup yesterday for S.J.‘s post, I quickly entered “fall eating mode.” You know, the apples dipped into gooey caramel, hot apple cider with one of those cute cinnamon sticks and hearty bowls of chili type of mode.

To satisfy these fall cravings, look no further than Sunday’s Buffalo Chili Fest, held from 1 to 5 p.m. at Statler City, 107 Delaware Ave., Buffalo. Twelve different competitors will offer their top chili creation, ranging from thick, meaty options to almost-unbearably hot concoctions.

Here’s a list of the participating restaurants: Buffalo Chophouse, Statler City, Roaming Buffalo, Laughlin’s, D’Arcy McGee’s, North Boston Fire Co., KP’s Kitchen, BW’s BBQ, Siena, Buffalo Fire Engine No. 34, Irishman Pub and Eatery, and Bones.

Tickets are only $5 for admission, and attendees will pay a small fee for each individual sample of chili. There’s no additional charge for a performance by Holly Kay, whose album “Everything Happens for a Reason” is available for purchase on iTunes. A pop singer with roots in blues, Kay’s “Let Go” earned notoriety when it was featured in the film “Flicka: Country Pride” starring Clint Black.

Exotic takes on chili are frequent at Chili Fest, as rattlesnake chili has been offered in the past. (Don’t ask me how they tracked down real rattlesnakes, as those little devils are downright terrifying.) You never know what may be next: wolverine chili? Spider chili? Ostrich chili? Leave your comfort zone and dive into the stomach-warming goodness on Sunday.
