Firefly floats to the city, will replace Zillycakes

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

East Aurora-based couture cupcake retailer Firefly Cupcakes has announced that it will open a second location this spring, replacing Zillycakes at 1008 Elmwood Ave.

Although Zillycakes owner Zilly Rosen spent considerable time trying to find a local buyer for her cupcake shop, which officially closes tomorrow, she had relatively little luck and placed much of her equipment on Craigslist.

Firefly Cupcakes owner Wendy Egloff stepped in, however, and purchased the space with the intention of renovating.

According to the press release, the new second Firefly Cupcakes will offer several perks:

Firefly Cupcakes second location will mirror the first with a showcase full of over-the-top cupcakes based on fun weekly themes accompanied by Stumptown Coffee. Also added to both locations will be a new cake menu to round out the current all-cupcake menu. Renovation plans include two in-house dining areas and a cake studio for Zillycakes’ Rosen, who will be in residence at Firefly. Rosen will offer cake classes, custom cake design and high-end event cake production that have put her on the map.

It’s exciting that Rosen will still have an outlet to showcase her cupcake and cake creating abilities, while Firefly capitalizes on the opportunity to expand into the city of Buffalo.

Browse Firefly’s current cupcake menu makes “exotic” sound boring, as options include churro, pumpkin distraction, banana bread, whoopie cake, Prosecco, chocolate bacon and Blue Moon.

Cupcake lovers, rejoice. What was once a bittersweet void—the prospect of losing Zillycakes definitely was a loss for the Elmwood community—is now an opportunity to sample something new, and Rosen will continue to ply her trade.
