Happy National Pierogi Day

blog by Kathryn Przybyla • October 08, 2012 @ 12:13pm
As Buffalo.com’s self-proclaimed “Polish Princess,” I considered it my duty to wish all of you a happy National Pierogi Day.
Ever since my appearance as a guest judge in Buffalo’s Best Pierogi contest at Corpus Christi Church, I’ve taken my pierogi seriously. The delicious little dumplings have been a weekly meal for my own family, with a stocked up freezer always ready to go.
According to Kiss Me I’m Polish,
Commonly considered to be the national dish of Poland, pierogi are made of a thinly rolled dough and can be filled with the a variety of ingredients. Popular savory fillings include potato and cheese (pierogi ruskie) and sauerkraut (pierogi z kapustą kwaszoną). Sweeter variations embrace seasonal fruits such as apples and cinnamon (pierogi z jabłkami i cynamonem) or blueberries (pierogi z jagodami).
Looking for some pierogi in Buffalo? K Sisters on Clinton Street in Buffalo cook up a ton of authentic dishes, “just how grandma used to make them.” Prosit!, a German and Polish restaurant and bier garten in Williamsville offers a “Taste of Poland” plate that includes haus-made Golabki, smoked kielbasa and of course, pierogi courtesy of Mrs. Szczesniak.
Still wary about the Polish delight? I mean, if pierogi are Martha Stewart’s favorite food, you can at least give them a try.
Smacznego and Happy National Pierogi Day, everyone!
