Today’s the day, America. Grab your barbecue skewers and paint your nails in a patriotic fashion—IT IS INDEPENDENCE DAY.

For many Americans, today’s a day off from work. It’s a rare mid-week treat of a day when 9-to-5 at a cubicle is replaced with endless options for outdoor fun. And if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by Americana, we’re here to sort things out for you. The info and links below will break down the Fourth of July basics: where to buy fireworks, watch fireworks, lounge on a beach; how to char a hot dog properly; and how to make a classic apple pie.

AH, ‘MERICA!

Beaches
With help from the Buffalo News’ Discover special publication, my colleague Kathryn pulled the best bets for Buffalo-area beaches on both sides of the border. Beaches included are:
Sunset Bay, Evangola State Park, Bennett Beach, Wendt Beach, Woodlawn Beach State Park, Beaver Island State Park, Canadian Beaches, Crystal Beach and Sherkston.

Fireworks
This comprehensive Buffalo News article lists just about every sanctioned fireworks display in Western New York and nearby Southern Ontario.

Now, if you’re looking to buy fireworks (which, of course, you will not use in New York state because that would be illegal), take a short drive to Pennsylvania. Sky King and Phantom Fireworks in North East, Penn., just a short 75 miles from Buffalo, are both open 8 a.m. to midnight today. Keystone Fireworks in Bradford, Penn., is a 65-mile drive and is also open 8 a.m. to midnight.

Food
It may be a holiday, but who’s immune to forgetting some key ingredient to marshmallow ambrosia salad? No fear, Tops and Wegmans are both open regular hours today. Got get your canned fruit cocktail, ya big goof! Check out this post on USA-themed treats that are easy to make with minimal prep time. And don’t skip the video tip on preparing a perfectly charred hot dog.

Weather
The heat is on for July Fourth. As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, weather.com predicts a gorgeous sunny holiday in Buffalo, with the temperature maxing out around 89 degrees. Here’s a more detailed snapshot of what to expect in terms of temperatures:
