Kristen Wiig talks WNY roots

Recently retired “Saturday Night Live” alumna Kristen Wiig may be a Hollywood big-timer now, but the quirky comedian had a bit of a rough entertainment start in Western New York.
In an interview with Marie Claire Magazine—of which Wiig is the covergirl for the August issue on newstands next week—Wiig discusses her modest show biz beginnings in the Rochester area.
Although she harbored dreams of fame as an actor, she wasn’t quite camera- or stage-ready as a youngster, she told the magazine reporter:
“‘I hated speaking in public,’ she recalls. ‘I would miss school just so I wouldn’t have to do it.’ When Wiig was cast in a school play, the musical Anything Goes (‘probably wearing some weird sailor outfit’), she came out onstage and waved to her mother in the audience.”
It’s pretty obvious that Wiig wasn’t the wallflower for long, as she just wrapped up her seventh successful season on SNL. Regardless of her increased exposure and eventual fame, Wiig still manages a perfect WNY accent on cue.
