Sweatin’ with the yogis

blog by S.J. Velasquez • October 14, 2012 @ 1:03pm
For yogis, some like it hot.
Bikram yoga, also known at hot yoga, turns up the temperature to a whopping 105 degrees. And although the heat seems extreme, Western New Yorkers are flocking to the area’s hot yoga studios—including a brand new Bikram studio in Hamburg.
Named for its originator, Bikram Choudhury, Bikram yoga includes 26 poses and two distinct breathing exercises. According to EverydayHealth.com, Choudhury won India’s national yoga championships four times, then he went on to compete as a marathon runner, and then later he competed in the Olympics as a weightlifter.
The benefits of performing yoga in extreme heat are debated, but Choudhury and Bikram yogis believe it helps increase strength and flexibility, and it detoxifies the body.
Regardless of reported dangers, locals are loving hot yoga. Three studios in Western New York offer hot yoga—and, in many cases, warm yoga that’s not quite as intensely hot as traditional Bikram.
