The end of Zillycakes: Local dessert shop to close

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

(Update: Zillycakes owner Zilly Rosen will now unite efforts with Firefly Cupcakes, the East Aurora dessert shop opening a second location at 1008 Elmwood.)

Zillycakes owner Zilly Rosen announced via Facebook on Monday that her dessert shop on 1008 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo, will shut its doors March 9 after nearly four years in business.

As Buffalo News’ food editor Andrew Galarneau alluded to in a blog post last month, Rosen’s decision is based on spending more time with her family—she’ll continue to create desserts with more freedom than the daily duties of running a dessert shop.

Here’s the full Facebook note written by Rosen:

I have some hard news to share with all my FaceBook fans today. Zillycakes is closing. Saturday March 9th will be the last day our Elmwood storefront will be open. We have loved serving you for the past 4 years! I will continue on with work in cake, art, design, and teaching, but in a more limited way that allows me to spend more time with my family. Thank you all for your love and support. Please know this was a difficult decision for me!

Through a Facebook message, Rosen revealed that her attempts to sell the business—the space, the equipment and the staff—to a new owner went in vain, and she’s now put the equipment and inventory on Craigslist. She’ll continue to collaborate with Delish! owner Deborah Clark in crafting the 2013 wedding cakes previously ordered, Galarneau’s post also notes.

Rosen’s dessert-related efforts have earned considerable press, as Rosen was the lead cake-artist Food Network’s Halloween Ghost Stories contest and, before Zillycakes opened, also created 1,200 mini cupcakes in President Obama’s likeness after he won the 2008 Election (see image right courtesy of Zillycakes’ website).

It’s always unfortunate to hear about a small, locally-owned shop closing. I’m sure she’ll continue to have success with her future endeavors, though. Good luck to Zilly!
