Vintage Buffalo sports moments immortalized on Twitter - INTERVIEW

If there’s one thing that Buffalo loves, it’s our sports teams.

From the Bills and Sabres and even the former Buffalo Braves, throwbacks to the “good ole days” are just a photo and a memory away. Andy Gray, a special projects producer at SI.com, recognized that and took to twitter to feature a day of city-centered vintage photos to tweet to followers of his @SI_Vault account.

Buffalo ended up being his pick.

“I like to do the random city thing every so often, more to break up the monotony than anything else. I usually post a random selection of sports pics each day so it’s nice to try something different,” Gray said on Wednesday afternoon. “I posted one tweet saying I was thinking of picking a random city and then I went to a meeting. When I returned I had about 400 responses and Buffalo had the most requests—by my unofficial count.”

I asked Gray if he had ever been to the Queen City before.

“I have never been to Buffalo, actually. But as I said in a tweet earlier, the people are ridiculously nice and friendly. Most people on Twitter just demand I post a certain picture or yell at me if I get a fact wrong. Buffalo people went out of their way to thank me—which is unusual and frankly awesome.”

Some of Gray’s favorite photos that he shared on Wednesday include the shot of Darryl Talley working at McDonald’s and Bruce Smith lifting weights. He was also a fan of the old Buffalo Braves pictures, due to his love of old 1970s NBA photos.

A fan of some Buffalo sports teams himself, Gray had an interesting connection to the day’s tweets.

“My favorite Buffalo athlete is probably Doug Flutie mostly because he grew up in the town next to where I grew up so he’s been in my life since I was a little kid,” he said. “I also love most of those Bills teams that went to four Super Bowls.”

With such great pictures shared with the Buffalo sports community, is there a chance this could happen again?

“Yes, definite chance.”

Gray seemed pleasantly surprised by the feedback and messages from the Buffalo community—we’re not called the city of good neighbors for nothing. But it doesn’t sound like he’ll be around posting old football pictures much longer.

“I come up with many of the ideas and execution of our photo galleries but in a couple weeks, I’m moving full-time to swimsuit. And yes, I know I have a great job.”
