WNY Olympian update: Lochte’s Day 2 doldrums, Anderson’s flying start

Update, 7/30: Swimming the anchor leg in an unfamiliar event, Lochte drew considerable criticism for conceding a late lead to France in the 4 x 100 freestyle, and the Americans settled for silver.
The Canandaigua-born swimmer, who smashed Michael Phelps on Saturday, has been mired in out-of-the-pool rumors swirling about late bed times and his relationship with Australian swimmer Blair Evans. Is it at all overblown because of Lochte’s ‘single’ comments before the Olympics and the hype given to this ESPN the Magazine piece?
West Seneca was particularly proud of its 6’10 Olympic men’s volleyball stand-out Matt Anderson, who helped the American squad past Serbia, 3-0, Sunday. A powerful outside hitter, the WNY-native led his team with 18 points in the convincing win. The United States faces Germany, who was swept by Russia in its first match, Tuesday evening.

Sunday, 7/29— Elma archer Jake Kaminski played an integral role as part of the U.S. Olympic Archery Team’s run to a silver medal Saturday in London, while Rochester-born Ryan Lochte lived up to the hype in smashing Olympic record-holder Michael Phelps in the 400-meter individual relay to earn gold.
Kaminski was part of a U.S. team that fell to the gold-winning Italians by a tantalizingly close score of 219-218. The Los Angeles Times reports that the U.S. archers were the first American team to medal in 2012 and also the first U.S. archers to win a medal in 12 years.
“We accomplished our main goal, which was to come over here, enjoy ourselves, have a good time, be in the moment and just absorb it all,” Kaminski told Helene Elliott of the LA Times. “It’s still a great, great thing.”
In the pool, Lochte—who was born in Canandaigua but now resides in Daytona Beach—dominated the field in his first event. As a result of Lochte’s strong effort in the butterfly, Phelps’ top stroke, the former 585-er exploded in the backstroke and breaststroke for a commanding lead. The freestyle lap didn’t hold him back, either, as Lochte won by over three seconds and Phelps failed to medal.
“This is my year,” said Lochte, who inserted his USA-inspired “grillz” (jewelry for the mouth, of course) for the medal ceremony, to the AP. “I know it and I feel it, because I’ve put in hard work. I’ve trained my butt off for four years ... and there’s no better way to start this Olympics off than getting gold.”
While Lochte and Phelps have plenty more chances to go head-to-head throughout the rest of Olympic swimming, you can still pull for other Western New Yorkers. Fredonia’s Jenn Suhr will participate in pole vault, West Seneca’s Matt Anderson on the men’s volleyball team and Rochester’s Abby Wambach on the U.S. women’s soccer team.
