World Series viewing party at Pettibones Wednesday

On the outside, you’d think Major League Baseball was an afterthought in Buffalo, as only the Triple-A Bisons represent the Queen City on the diamond. Still, I’ve rarely seen Twitter buzz as steadily as when Derek Jeter broke his ankle or when the St. Louis Cardinals kept mounting comebacks.
As the season reaches its conclusion with the World Series match-up between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers, Pettibones Grille, 1 James D. Griffin Plaza, Buffalo, will host a viewing party for Game 1. There will be all-you-can-eat chicken wings and Coca-Cola from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and admission is only a $5 donation to the United Way. Doors to Pettibones open at 7 p.m., with first pitch at 8.
Beginning at 5 p.m., however, a sale of game-worn Buffalo Bisons apparel at reduced rates will take place inside the team’s clubhouse. Still dreaming of that Zack Wheeler or Matt Harvey jersey? Think there’ll be a Jenrry Mejia glove laying around? This is your chance—and they’ll be vintage now that the Bisons are property of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Several TVs at Pettibones will air the game, so you won’t have to huddle next to a number of caffeinated baseball fans greedily flinging wing sauce left and right. Also, attendees receive a complimentary raffle ticket for a drawing to win more Bisons’ road jerseys. While rumors of a staged argument with former Bisons manager Wally Backman swirled a few weeks ago, it doesn’t look like that’ll be taking place.
Former Bison star and NLCS MVP Marco Scutaro, Pablo “Kung Fu Panda” Sandoval and the pitching quartet of Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong and Barry Zito lead the Giants, who just thrashed the Cardinals 9-0 in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series. San Francisco seeks its second World Series win in three years, the first time that’s happened since the New York Yankees won three straight—and four of five—between 1996 and 2000. Zito may get the call in Game 1, though that’s unconfirmed.
For the AL representative Tigers, ace Justin Verlander takes the mound in what’s been a dominant postseason for the reigning Cy Young Award winner. After a 17-8 win-loss record in the regular season, coupled with an impressive 2.64 ERA, Verlander has posted a sparkling 3-0 record and a .74 ERA. in the playoffs. He’ll climb the hill for the series opener. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta, another former Bison, and Delmon Young are the hottest Tiger hitters entering the World Series.
