Start skanking: Ska heroes The Slackers to visit Mohawk Place

by Dan Ludwig • October 18, 2011 @ 7:00am
Certainly you’ve heard of The Slackers before! The Brooklyn-based band just released its 12th studio album on punk label Hellcat Records and is currently touring the country, with a stop in Buffalo slated for Oct. 18 at Mohawk Place.
Oh what’s that? You’re not familiar with The Slackers? That’s because the ska sextet likes to keep a low profile, shying away from self-promotion and publicity as well as keeping their distance from major record labels and MTV playlists. As the band’s website explains, The Slackers are “...not content with letting the record industry dictate their output.”
Maybe the band’s independence is what dictates their unique style—a style that has gained a cult following since The Slackers came on the scene in 1991. Not content to be categorized under the umbrella term “ska,” the band’s front-man, Vic Ruggiero, calls the group’s music “Jamaican Rock and Roll.” The hybrid sound that The Slackers produce can be described as a conglomeration of reggae, garage rock, and jazz music.
Is your interest piqued? Well, check out the six-man ska squad this Tuesday, Oct. 18 when they take the stage at Mohawk Place (47 E. Mohawk St., Buffalo). Tickets are $15 and the show starts at 7 p.m.
