A Raisin in the Sun
SUBVERSIVE THEATRE PRESENTS A RAISIN IN THE SUN JAN 26TH – FEB 25TH
For the fourth show in our 2011-2012 season of plays, Subversive Theatre is proud to present perhaps theatre’s most inspiring tribute to the struggle for civil rights and human dignity, A RAISIN IN THE SUN by Lorraine Hansberry, sponsored by the Western Regional Office of the New York Civil Liberties Union.
Written in 1958, this incendiary drama brilliantly captures the passion, the pain, the aspiration, and the outrage that would soon fuel the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements of the 1960s. Set in the tenements of Chicago’s Southside, A RAISIN IN THE SUN follows the struggles of one African-American family to find dignity in the face of gross economic disparity and bitter prejudice.
Our rendition of A RAISIN IN THE SUN is directed by Victoria Pérez* and features the acting talents of Pete Johnson as “Walter Lee Younger” and Patricia Armstrong* as his indefatigable “Mama” with Lydia Douglas as “Beneatha,” Candace Whitfield as “Ruth,” and ten-year-old Rashard Reynolds in the role of “Travis.” The ensemble also features Marcus Thompson, Jr., Phil Davis, Leon S. Copeland, Jr.*, Beverly Crowell, Jess Abel, Michael Morel, and Andre Colon.
Set & Lighting Design is by Patrick Medlock-Turek, with Sound Design by Kelly Beuth* & John Shotwell*, Costume Design by Hope Wardlaw, and Fight Choreography by Emily Pedersen.
A RAISIN IN THE SUN runs January 26th through February 25th with performances Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30. All shows are at Subversive Theatre’s regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo’s Great Arrow Building. Tickets are $20.00 general admission or $15.00 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.
