Outside of Moura's NY Deli on Court Street

If you work near Lafayette Square and don’t have the time or energy to pack your lunch (do people actually do that?), Moura’s NY Deli may already be on your radar.  Huddled snugly on Court Street opposite Tim Hortons, Moura’s reeks of history—it was one of downtown’s first delis—while managing to smell delicious inside.

In business for 21 years, Moura’s owner Mark…

Regardless of efforts to revitalize Buffalo’s Theatre District, constant obstacles hinder growth.  A decrease in county funding for arts, poor parking and business closings have limited profit for the metro rail section of Main Street (600 block), while structural improvements are planned but progressing slowly—construction is scheduled for fall 2011 and 2012.

It’s Sysco’s time to shine

blog by Ben Kirst  •   •

Sysco is making a ton of sweet, sweet cash. And french fries.

Whether you’re enjoying a delicious Tex-Mex Cheese Steak Sandwich in South Buffalo, a super-sized fish fry on Hertel Avenue, or the sweet plate of pierogi out in Cheektowaga, odds are good that the food all came from the same place - the Sysco Corporation.  And you thought you were special!

Seriously, Sysco is everywhere - the company is the number-one food service supplier in the…

Chris' NY Sandwich Co.

Before our “Sammi Saunter” travels, we expected contrasts between eateries that specialize in lunch fare.  Fera’s boasted quick service and catered to the on-the-run crowd, while Joe’s Deli’s diverse offerings and ample space encouraged a more leisurely meal.  Which would Chris’ NY Sandwich Co. resemble, or would the recipient of Buffalo Spree’s Best Downtown Lunch…

Cinco de Mayo: an American excuse to party

The title is a little harsh—some historians even believe that Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 over Napoleon’s flashy French army turned the tide of the American Civil War.  If you’re intrigued or simply get a buzz from reading 19th century Mexican history, then, by all means, read David E. Hayes-Bautista’s take on the roots of Cinco de Mayo.

Where’s the beef? New York state, apparently.

Who’s got the best burger in the Empire state? Two New York organizations set out to find the answer.

The New York Beef Industry Council and the New York Beef Producer’s Association identified 10 restaurants from across New York that have the best beefy sandwiches—among them is one Western New York eatery. Here’s the list of those restaurants and their award winning hamburgers:

Joe's Deli sign on Hertel and Colvin.

Upscale, high-priced restaurants are not for everyone.  After ten years of training at culinary school and work in New York City, California and Syracuse, Joe’s Deli owner Joe Lyons accepted that running an uppity luxury restaurant wasn’t for him.  His passion for the craft hadn’t disappeared though—merely shifted in a new direction.

Joe’s Deli, on the corner of Hertel and…
