Buffalo Soup-Fest

video by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

Buffalo Eats blogger Donnie Burtless and I were pretty surprised to experience the huge hit that was last year's inaugural Soup-Fest. This year's event was even bigger.

There were more restaurants participating, a larger space within the venue devoted to the event, more innovative soups and exotic ingredients. There was also a soup-eating contest (more on that later -- including…

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

Eat It Up image

In the third audio episode of “Eat It Up,” Buffalo food blogger Donnie Burtless sits down with the creators of Lloyd Taco Truck, the first food truck in Buffalo.

Pete Cimino and Chris Dorsaneo discuss the history of their taco truck—including the fact that it almost wasn’t a taco truck—and the plans for the future. Cimino and Dorsaneo announced plans to raise funds for a second…

No one will mess with this chip condiment.

Earlier this week, Buffalo Business First reported a new venture for legendary Sabres enforcer Rob Ray.

Pellicano’s Specialty Foods Inc., a South Buffalo based company founded in 2000, acquired Grammies Salsa, a North Carolina food company in 2010. Looking for an athlete to help with its new acquisition, Pellicano’s approached Rob…

Fancy & Delicious Baking Co.

video by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

I first heard about Fancy & Delicious Baking Co. while wandering through Allentown in the late winter months. I saw a small poster hanging in restaurant window advertising the bread company. Interested in this bread share, I contacted Tori Kuper who introduced me to the group's founders and invited me to a workshop at the clay oven. Here's a little video I shot in the spring and…

The craft beer surge is exploding on an international scale, and two Buffalo bars rank among the world’s leaders.

Elmwood Avenue’s Blue Monk and Cole’s, both owned by local beer aficionado Mike Shatzel, were recognized in RateBeer.com’s Best Beer Restaurants 2012, a poll that compiled the results of 3.5 million craft beer reviewers across the world. We love it when Buffalo is…

Guy gets saucy

Word on the street is that “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” star Guy Fieri is entering the chicken wing ring right in time for the Super Bowl.

Yumsugar reports that Fieri will introduce a line of wing sauces, including a Buffalo-style sauce, later this month. Aside from the standard Buffalo sauce, Fieri’s also offering a habañero mustard sauce and Korean barbecue flavor. Yumsugar’s…

Wings, wings, wings, wings-wings, wings

You’re welcome, America.

Thanks to Buffalo, the football fan’s snack of choice was born. This year, the National Wing Council estimates more than 1.25 billion Buffalo wing portions will be consumed during Super Bowl weekend. That’s more than 100 million pounds of wings—a 12 percent increase since last year.

On any given Sunday, Americans eat only a third of what we’re expected…

Food truck regulations: finally an answer?

Finally, the “Buffalo food truck regulations” saga might have a conclusion today.

At 2 p.m. at the 13th floor Council Chamber in City Hall, the Buffalo Common Council will meet to vote on a proposal agreed upon by the food trucks’ representatives and Entrepreneurs for a Better Buffalo (the stationary, brick-and-mortar restaurants) to establish a framework for these mobile food…

Buffalo-style blunders?

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

So now that it’s official—the Patriots and the Giants are going to the Super Bowl—everyone needs to concentrate on the Buffalo-style [fill in the blank] that you’re bringing to the Super Bowl party.

Buffalo wing dip is so 2009, and ordering wings from your favorite pizzeria is going to be damn-near impossible on such a busy day. It’s time to get creative with the hot sauce and…

Call for competitive eaters

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

Buffalo Soup-Fest organizers are looking for a few good eaters—at least five eaters, anyway.

At 1 p.m. Jan. 29 on the Millennium Hotel stage, competitors will be challenged to eat as much soup as possible in a 10-minute window. The soup will be the chef’s choice, but organizer Matt Carlucci said it’ll probably end up being a type of cream-based soup. You’re not getting away easy…
