35 years of Wegmans Buffalovin’

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •

I, for one, can’t fathom a life sans $6 meals. (Am I right, Alec Baldwin?)

It was 35 years ago that Wegmans entered the Buffalo area supermarket market (not a typo, I swear) when the Rochester-based grocery opened on Dick Road. To celebrate 35 years of Buffalovin’, Wegmans stores will host “We Love Buffalo!” events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at stores throughout the region.

“This is a special time for Wegmans as we recognize the relationship we have with our employees and customers alike by celebrating our anniversary with the great community that is Buffalo,” senior vice president of the Buffalo division stores Michael Keating said in a release.

Wegmans employees will hand out cookies and glasses of sparkling juice to mark the anniversary, and stores will highlight “products and services that have a Buffalo connection or are unique to Wegmans such as Cocopops, Wegmans Menu magazine, locally grown and produced products, Buffalo Chicken options in prepared foods, and the Shoppers Club card.”

I don’t know about you, but I am pretty anxious to learn Buffalo’s connection to Cocopops.

Also, has anyone else ever seen this extended Wegmans commercial featuring Baldwin and his mom? “You know, I might leave show business—to be closer to Wegmans,” Baldwin says in the final frame. I hear that, hermano.
