Buffalo Cash Mob gets sweet tooth, chooses Chow Chocolat

by Ben Tsujimoto • January 05, 2012 @ 10:23am
Building off of recognition from the Wall Street Journal in late December, the Buffalo Cash Mob movement to jump-start local businesses has determined the next location: Chow Chocolat on 715 Elmwood Ave.
Chris Smith, an engineer for Oracle Corp. and a local writer for Artvoice, was credited in the Wall Street Journal for planting the idea of a “cash mob” to spur local business—the idea has since been carried out by 20 cities in addition to Buffalo. The goal is to gather roughly 100 people together to cascade upon a local business, with each participant spending between $10 and $20 without discount. The purpose is in stark contrast to the daily deal model—supporting local businesses with a coupon—because it offers full value for products from city vendors. Follow the movement on Twitter as it unfolds by searching #buffcashmob.
The mob will descend on Chow Chocolat between 4 and 6 p.m. Friday.
Aside from the satisfaction of contributing to the local economy, there’s a delightful array of options at the dessert-and-coffee based retailer. Known for their thick “hot chocolat” drinks, there’s also an abundance of individual chocolate options, including the following outside-the-box flavors: habanero mango, coconut curry, key lime pie and the mysterious “fire and air.” Here’s a list of the rest of the choices.
If you see someone holding a stack of Parisian macaroons while rubbing his growing belly, it’s probably me. We support local business in style.
