I was scrolling through my Twitter feed when I came across this question posted by USA Today: “What city is ranked ‘America’s Drunkest’?”

Admittedly, I froze for a half-second, realizing there was a strong chance the answer could be Buffalo. I was relieved to know that the Queen City didn’t claim the gold medal for drunkenness, but we still made the list. Ah, that list, complied by the Daily Beast, was based on statistics from market-research firm Experian Simmons and the Centers for Disease Control. Taking into consideration the cities’ populations and their residents’ drinking habits, the Daily Beast rattled off America’s 25 “drunkest cities.”

Buffalo came in 16th, but our statistics weren’t much different than those of Boston, the no. 1 city on the list. Here’s how the cities compare:

Boston:
Population over age 21: 4,750,296
Avg. monthly drinks consumed per person: 15.5
Percent of population that are heavy drinkers: 7.4%
Percent of population that are binge drinkers: 20.1%

Buffalo:
Population over age 21: 1,170,570
Avg. monthly drinks consumed per person: 13.1
Percent of population that are heavy drinkers: 8.7%
Percent of population that are binge drinkers: 19.4%
