Buffalo’s own Thirsty Dudes drink up national attention

by S.J. Velasquez • July 26, 2011 @ 9:58am
Buffalonians are all excited about the new restaurants and food trucks opening in the months ahead, hoping that each eatery will offer something different. And while we’re all waiting for a taste of something new, three straightedge local dudes are already drinking foreign flavors and blogging about it. Their blog, Thirsty Dudes, is catching some national attention, too.
Fox News gives the dudes, Derek Neuland, Jason Draper and Mike Literman, some love in an article published today. The Fox writer is quick to point out that Buffalo doesn’t boast fancy-pants yuppy grocery joints like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, so the guys started out by scouring Wegmans shelves, according to a March Buffalo News story—and by the way, I’d take Wegmans over Whole Foods any day of the week.
Neuland said the Thirsty Dudes still head to Wegmans every Tuesday to pick up some burritos, and they’re always checking for new stock in the beverage aisles. They’ve also learned a few tricks for finding unusual drinks locally, like shopping at Big Lots for discontinued items. They also turn to ethnic markets and websites to purchase weird and unusual drinks, sampling everything from bubbly pops to chunky soy shakes.
None of the three guys drink alcohol—in fact, Neuland said he’s never consumed an alcoholic beverage in his life. “I never saw the need to, and I feel great about it,” the 29-year-old added.
While you won’t read about booze on the Thirsty Dudes site, you can expect honest reactions to all types of bizarre beverages and popular soda pops. Read their blog to get schooled on beverages of the non-alcoholic sort, and read a little Q&A with the Thirsty Dudes on Buffalo Eats.
